1. Anatomy and Physiology

The Swedish massage was created on the Western notions of anatomy and physiology; there are only five main strokes used in this massage. It is totally different from the Eastern discipline, which consists of complex strokes.

2. Per Henrik Ling

Per Henrik Ling was a Swedish physiologist at the University of Stockholm (1776-1839) who introduced both the Swedish massage and physical therapy.

3. Elbow Injury

Per Henrik Ling suffered with gout that affected his elbows. He tried to cure himself by applying tapping (percussion) strokes around the affected area and this later improved his condition. He was able to develop his technique, which is known today as the Swedish massage.

4. Dr. Charles and Dr. George Taylor

In the 1850’s, brothers Charles and George Taylor brought this “technique” to the United States.

5. The Swedish Massage

The exact techniques used in the Swedish massage include the use of strokes, tapping movements, kneading and friction on the soft muscle tissue in the body.
